The sprint to the end of 2016

Hi all.

The Parent's Committee met on 27 October and have set aside some key dates in the lead up to the end of term and 2016:

Christmas Tree Sales - Saturday 3rd & Sunday 4th December 2016 at Bunnings Coburg
Each year we sell freshly harvested Christmas trees to raise funds for the Group.
This is done in conjunctions with a number of other Groups in our district (including 1st Oak Park).
We are looking for helpers during these days to help sell the trees, and assist with deliveries.
For those who help out, it's a chance to get first pick to buy a great Christmas tree!
Contact Connie on 0408 320 028 if you can help or sign up on the roster at the hall from next week

13 September 2016

Hi all.

A few updates before the end of term break-ups happening this week.

School Holidays
As we wind down for the end of term 3, Cubs and Scouts will be taking a well deserved break over the holidays. So no Cubs and Scouts during the school holidays.

  • Cubs will be back on Thursday night 6 October 2016.
  • Leader Rachel McMahon will email the Scouts return date.

Bunnings BBQ - Saturday 8 October
We have the last BBQ fundraiser for 2016 on Saturday 8 October 2016 (8am - 4pm) at Bunnings Coburg on Gaffney Street.

As a spring Saturday BBQ, this is a huge chance to raise some more funds for the Group.  It will be busy but a lot of fun, so we need parents to step up and volunteer.

Please email me at paulie.ferrari@bigpond.com with your name, mobile and time you are available, including a second preference time. We are looking for 2 hours from each family to make this a success.

Please don't underestimate how important these fundraising events are.  Last week the Group purchased 4 new tents using the proceeds from the August BBQ fundraiser. Every dollar goes into equipment, facilities and materials for our kids.

District Cub Camp
Last but not least, good luck to all the cubs heading to District Camp this weekend. Also a huge thanks to all the parents and helpers heading along for the trip.  Have a great time!

3 September 2016

We've got a Local Matters Jar at Grill'd Northland this month - spread the word!

A tasty way to raise some $$$ for 1st Coburg Scouts

Some great news from our former treasurer Melinda Christophersen.  For the Month of September, 1st Coburg Scouts has a jar for Local Matters.  There are three community groups and we share from the $500 Grill'd donates to these groups, with the most successful getting $300 and the other two group $100 each.

How do we get the $300?

Every person who visits Grill'd and buys a meal gets a bottle top toke to put into one of three jars (one for each community group).  The group with the highest number of tokens get the $300.

So if you're at Northland and like a burger or ten, make sure you pop into Grill'd and make your token count!

If you or your family/friends have any other fundraising ideas for the Group, contact me with your idea so we can check it out.

Finally a huge thanks to Melinda for keeping on top of this, even after leaving the committee more than 12 months ago. THANKS!

Bunnings BBQ 12 March 2016 - the results are in

Hi all.

We had a great day at Bunnings Coburg today, selling over $1900 in sausages and drinks, with net profit just over $1200.  his will help the Group with much needed funds to continue our camping and Group equipment upgrades, and some targeted spending on security to reduce the likelihood of another break and enter.

It was really great to see many new family members joining in to help make today a success.

We have two more BBQ fundraisers in 2016 (August and October), so keep an eye out for rosters and more information closer to these dates.

Thanks again to everyone who helped out to make today a success.

Paul

Break and enter at Hall

Hi all.

I am saddened to say that earlier this week some people took it upon themselves to break into the Hall by jimmying the front door lock and took the wooden combustion heater we installed last year, and it now appears they took our cash tin (empty-ironically).
We have reported this to the Police and are in the process of lodging an insurance claim.  We have also repaired and upgraded the security around the lock on the door to prevent this happening again (at least through this access point). We have also decided that the sensor lighting outside the Hall will be left on around the clock to make it less appealing for would be thieves, so we expect a bit more money to be spent on power.

Moving forward Andrew Murray (Quartermaster) and the committee will be investigating other security options to further harden our Hall.

I am bitterly disappointed at the fact someone in our community may have taken it upon themselves to steal one of our prized fixed assets, especially from our Scout Group.

If you have any questions, ideas or concerns please contact either myself or Group Leader Connie.

We're off and running!

Hi all.

A huge thanks to everyone for making 2016 at 1st Coburg Scouts start off with a bang! The year will get busier as the news below shows:

New starters at Cubs
Welcome to Callan, Logan and Kai who have joined to Cub pack for 2016 - Welcome to you and your families!
There are a couple more aspiring cubs in the wings who we hope to welcome soon making the Cubs pack bigger than ever.

Founders Day -  Sunday 28 February 2016 at Cole Reserve, Pascoe Vale
Every year our district celebrates the birthday of Lord Robert Baden-Powell's birthday (22 February 1857).  This year is no different. This is a free event for cubs, scouts and their families with a barbecue lunch provided.
Start time is 9:30am registration for a 10:00am start
Location: Cole Reserve, Cumberland Road Pascoe Vale

Parent's Committee - Wednesday 17 February from 7pm
We are holding our first Parent's Committee meeting at the 1st Coburg Scout Hall on Wednesday night.  All parents are invited to attend as we want as many parents involved in the decisions of the Committee.

We are still looking for parents to join the Committee in the Secretary and Fundraising Co-ordinator roles. The success of our group to date has been as a result of the great work from parents past and present.  We'd love more people to help shape our Group's future. We have some capital works planned for 2016 and we would value as many people to be involved in this plus the day-to-day management of the Group.  Talk to either myself or your leader if you have any questions.

Bunnings BBQ - Saturday 12 March 2016
The roster is filling up.  If you are swinging by the Scout hall for pick-up/drop-off this week, please put your name down for a few hours as this is a big opportunity to raise funds for our group, and for new parents a great way to meet parents and leaders.

Parent helpers - many hands make light work
If the idea of being on the Committee doesn't push your buttons, there is another way to contribute to the group through becoming a parent helper. Many of our parents have great skills and qualifications that can help enrich our children (sadly I have the boring banker/auditor skills....). It is a mandatory requirement to have a valid Working with Children's check done, however this is free if completed through Scouts.  Please contact the leaders or myself if you wish to sign up.

As always, please feel free to contact me if you have any questions
